The large village of Portaria, situated on the slopes of Mount
Pelion, is one of the most popular and beautiful of all villages
to be found anywhere across this great peninsula.
Portaria is a mountainous village that offers stunning and
inspiring scenery, and is a place where everyone can truly
experience the natural beauty and magic that the Pelion peninsula
is famous for.
The village of Portaria
is the ideal base from which visitors to Pelion can venture out,
and explore many regions, from the other mountainous villages, to
the stunning coastal resorts. It is situated close to the city of
Volos at just 13km, yet is far away enough for one to feel that
they are really in the wild, away from the noise, stress and everyday
life of the city.
Portaria had always been an important village in the history of
Pelion, and was one that was extremely well off both financially
and economically. Evidence of this can be seen by the ruins of the
"Theoxenia" hotel.
Though today only the shell of the hotel can be seen, it was considered
to be the most luxurious hotel in all of the Balkans. Unfortunately,
the hotel was destroyed during the German occupation of Greece in
the Second World War.
All over Portaria are places of extreme magic and beauty, such as
the spring water fall of Karavos, which is located in a very green
and tranquil area of the village.
There are paths all over the village which one can follow, passing
by many of the old traditional mansions, the beautiful nature and
vegetation, and where one can enjoy some stunning landscapes and
scenery of Portaria, neighbouring Makrinitsa, and the city of Volos.
There are several monasteries and churches in Portaria that are
well worth visiting. These include the monastery of "Panagias
of Portareas", which is actually where the village took it's
name from. There is also the Byzantine monastery of "Agios
Ioannis Prothromos", which is full of beautiful Byzantine icons
and decorations inside.
Portaria is an ideal destination in Pelion, and is perfect all year
round. During the summer months, you can head to one of the many
sandy beaches found along the coast, and enjoy the blue crystal
waters of either the Pagasitic Gulf, or the Aegean Sea.
During the winter months, many visitors from both Greece and beyond
head to the mountainous villages to enjoy the first rate facilities
of the famous Pelion ski centre, located at Agriolefkes.
Whichever season of the year you decide to visit Pelion, you can
be sure that your holidays will be ones of great times. Portaria
is a village of all seasons, and is one where we are sure you will
also gather some fond memories that you will cherish for many years
to come.
