Like many of the other inhabitants of Pelion in the 19th century,
to avoid the Turkish persecution during these times, the "Kantartzi"
family emigrated to North Africa and relocated in Egypt.
After working successfully for many years in the cotton industry
in Egypt, the family decided to return home to Pelion, towards
the end of the Turkish occupation in Greece.
With their wealth that they
had accumulated during their time in Egypt, work began on the construction
of the new family home. To design and supervise the construction
of the "Kantartzi" mansion, an Italian architect was appointed.
The mansion was completed on the 21st June 1859.
Up until the mid
20th century the mansion was inhabited, when the last descendent
of the family passed away. The mansion's huge steel doors remained
shut until over thirty years later, when a family from Volos purchsed
it in 1978. Restoration began and was completed in 1984, when the
mansion was converted into a traditional hotel.
Ever since, visitors and guests from all over the world have stayed
here at "Kantartzi". With it's unique atmosphere and beauty,
exactly as Mr.Kantartzi envisioned it all those years ago, "Arhontiko
Kantartzi" is the perfect place to stay when you visit this
amazing region of Greece.
In 1988, the Ministry of Culture declared "Arhontiko Kantartzi"
a work of art. With it's original style and dominating structure,
it is easy to see why, though this mansion should really been seen
to be appreciated.
